Salt of the Earth: A Christian Seasons Calendar

Meet the Artists

The artists live in Canada and the United States. All are members of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA).

Sandra Bowden’s (Pentecost 2) art is a complex meditation on time incorporating biblical archaeological references, segments of language and text, inscribed artifacts, timeworn pages from antique bibles, and intriguing musical scores and facsimiles. Sandra lives in Chatham, Massachusetts.

Friedrich Peter, RCA (Epiphany 1) is a designer, visual artist and calligrapher. He taught at the Vancouver School of Art and Design for four decades. Friedrich lives in
Vancouver, BC.
Virginia Wieringa’s (Advent, Pentecost 1) work encompasses painting, drawing, papermaking, printmaking and collage - sometimes all at the same
time! She sees her work as a visual response to faith, the mysteries of life and the world God created. Virginia lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Caroline Coolidge Brown’s (Easter, Pentecost 3) paintings and collages explore the use of text, story and symbol. She incorporates these elements on multiple visual and
conceptual levels. Several themes have emerged and inform her work: organic shapes and colours, the Biblical text in English, Latin and Spanish, Christian history, historic
artistic traditions and symbols. Caroline lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Carmen Philippe-Welton (Lent) uses photography as an integral part of her contemplative, devotional practice. The desert landscape in particular holds special meaning
for her, making an annual pilgrimage to the Sonora and Mohave. The desert light engenders feelings of wonder, mystery, hope, humility and awe. Carmen lives in Vancouver, BC.

Bruce Herman (Holy Week) holds the Lothlórien Distinguished Chair in Fine Arts at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts. A graduate of Boston University School for the Arts, Herman lectures widely and has had
work published in many books, journals, and popular magazines. His work has been shown internationally,
including in England, Italy, Canada, and Israel.

Jan Richardson (Pentecost 4) is an artist, writer, and ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. She
serves as director of The Wellspring Studio, LLC, and travels widely as a retreat leader and conference speaker.
She is known for her distinctive intertwining of word and image. Jan lives in Winter Park, Florida.

DeAnne Parks (Epiphany 2) has no idea what the outcome will be when she begins painting. It’s like a
spontaneous dance. She focuses on texture, color and shapes, expressing her feelings at a given moment. Bright
colors and thick paint are used to express themes related to spirituality and human relationships, especially those of community, hope and love. DeAnne lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.
John August Swanson (Christmas) paints in oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media, and is an independent printmaker of limited edition serigraphs, lithographs and etchings. John resides in Los Angeles, California.
